Back when we started out in photography, learning how to edit photos was hard enough. That’s why we’re making these raw photos free for download. Having raw photos for editing lets you practice editing with professional raw files.
What are raw photos?
If you’re wondering what raw photos are, you’re not alone. Raw photos are a type of file format used by high end cameras. Raw photos contain more information than typical photos which allows photographers greater flexibility in the editing process.
raw photos vs jpg – what’s the difference?
People often wonder what the difference is between RAW files & jpgs. They are two different types of files. Raw files refers to the uncompressed image files directly from your camera. Jpgs on the other hand are a compressed version that your camera has scaled down, and often applied some basic editing to. Hence “raw” means unedited, where jpg (even if you haven’t edited it!) is still not “raw”.
Raw files are much larger than standard jpg files because they contain more information, and are not compressed or altered in camera the way jpg photos are.
So why are they called “raw” photos?
Because raw photos are unedited, they are called “raw”. But this is a little confusing, because an unedited photo in jpg format is still NOT raw. True RAW photos have all the data that was originally recorded in the image, which allows you to access the “raw” ingredients and edit the photo later in post processing.

how to edit raw photos & process raw files
In order to edit raw files, you’ll need raw photo editing software. There are many raw photo editors out there. Lightroom, Capture One & Photoshop are 3 of the most popular professional editing programs designed to edit raw files. There are also a few editing software options for free raw photos. Often your camera will come with a free program of some kind to do basic raw picture editing, like Canons Raw utility, Sony Imaging app or Adobe Camera Raw. If this isn’t the case, you can actually edit raw photos online for free using google photos! Simply upload your photos to the cloud and access googles free editing software.
